Bone Bridge
A study has shown that a combination regimen of massage therapy and physical activity had significantly increased bone mineralization in preterm infants. This is an important event that could be used to help premature babies everywhere. Perhaps therapeutic massage can also be used to stimulate bone growth in preterm infants in Marlboro, New Jersey and Monmouth County, Englishtown, Manalapan, Morganville, Old Bridge, Freehold, Howell, Millstone, Matawan, Aberdeen, and Colts Neck.
Hany Aly, MD, Mohamed F. Moustafa, Sahar M. Hassanein, a N. Massaro, Hanna A. Amer and Kantilal Patel, staff members George Washington University Hospital and Children's National Medical Center in Washington, DC, and the Ain Shams School of Medicine, Cairo University, Egypt, did the study entitled "Physical activity combined with massage improves bone mineralization in preterm infants: A Randomized Trial." It was originally published in 2004 on pages 305-309 of the Journal of Perinatology, vol. 24.
The study included 30 premature infants who had gestational ages of only 35 weeks or less. All were less than two weeks old and weighed less than four pounds each.
The children were randomly divided into two groups. Children activity in the group given five minutes of daily massage therapy and range of motion exercises until each child reached a weight of four pounds. The session massage movements involving slow and gentle on the baby head, face, neck, shoulders, back, arms, hands, waist, thighs, legs and feet, while the child was prone. The physical activity involved five repetitions each gentle compression and extension or flexion of the baby's shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and ankles. The control group received no massage therapy or exercise.
Before any interventions were made and after the children had reached a weight of four pounds, biomarkers of bone formation and resorption were measured. These include levels of C-terminal procollagen peptide (PICP), pryidinoline urine (PYD), serum calcium, alkaline phosphatase and parathyroid hormone (PTH).
Daily monitoring was done in all feeding infants, measurement of their caloric intake, calcium, phosphorus and protein.
The study results showed that pryidinoline urine (PYD) and serum calcium increased in both groups of children, while there was no significant change in alkaline phosphatase.
There was no however, a significant increase in the average levels of PICP in the group of activity late in the study, in contrast to a decrease in the average levels of PICP in the group control.
Mean serum PTH also significantly increased in the group activity at the end of the study, compared with the levels of PTH in control group.
The effects of study intervention led researchers to conclude that "physical activity combined with massage stimulates baby bone formation in premature infants as evidenced by an increase in PICP, a biochemical marker of bone formation, and increased activity of PTH, also can stimulate bone growth and mineralization. "
